Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month

Return To Blog

Did you know that two-thirds of people affected by vision loss are women? Because of this, April is designated Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month by the National Eye Institute.

Statistics show that more women than men suffer from cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Women are also at higher risk for autoimmune conditions that can affect the eyes, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.

Steps women can take to help protect their eyes:

  • Monitor your vision often. If you notice a change in your vision, call your doctor right away. At Diagnostic Eye Center, we have same-day appointments available so we can address your concerns immediately.
  • Stop smoking. Smoking greatly increases your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, among other conditions.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. Leafy green vegetables are particularly beneficial for protecting the eye from oxidative damage. Vitamins can often be used to supplement the number of important antioxidants needed for certain conditions. Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning any supplements.
  • Exercise. Maintaining a healthy weight and good cardiovascular health can help prevent ocular complications from high blood pressure and diabetes.
  • Visit your general physician regularly. Many eye conditions are linked to systemic causes, so keeping track of your general health is very important.
  • Know your family history. Many ocular diseases, such as glaucoma, have a hereditary link. Be sure to inform your doctor of your family history, in case you need to be monitored more closely.

Last but not least, an annual comprehensive eye exam is important for women to protect vision health. Just because you are seeing well does not necessarily mean that your eyes are healthy.  Many conditions show no symptoms in the early stages, but prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial.

Call Diagnostic Eye Center today to schedule your annual eye exam with one of our qualified eye doctors! We are conveniently located in downtown Houston, Texas, and are accepting new patients!
